The Nazi Party (short for the National Socialist German Workers’ Party) was a German political party founded in 1919, and led by Adolf Hitler from 1921 until his death in 1945. The Nazis promoted an ultra-nationalist, racist, and anti-democratic political agenda. Taking advantage of German resentment of the hardships caused by the Treaty of Versailles and the Depression, the Nazi Party became Germany's largest political party in the early 1930s. After Hitler rose to power in 1933, he declared the Nazi Party to be Germany's only legal political organization. It governed the country by strict totalitarian methods until 1945.
